BIRDING AND CULTURE: CUZCO AND MACHU PICCHU
Birding and Inca culture: Cuzco and Machu Picchu
A relaxed journey through ancient history and Andean birdlife
This 7-day journey through southern Peru offers a well-balanced experience that combines the country’s most iconic archaeological sites with opportunities for birdwatching in scenic Andean landscapes. This tour blends cultural discovery with moments in nature—at a comfortable pace and with expert guidance throughout.
We begin in Lima, Peru’s vibrant capital. A guided walking tour of the colonial city center reveals elegant churches, ornate balconies, and centuries-old plazas. We also visit the renowned Larco Museum, considered the finest museum in the country. Its extraordinary collection of gold, silver, ceramics, and textiles provides a fascinating window into the lives of Inca and pre-Inca civilizations.
Next, we fly to the highland city of Cusco, once the capital of the Inca Empire. Here we explore its rich cultural heritage, including the City Cathedral, the Temple of the Sun (Qorikancha), and the impressive fortress of Sacsayhuamán, built with enormous stone blocks that still puzzle archaeologists today. We continue through the Sacred Valley, visiting the famous Pisac ruins, the living Inca town of Ollantaytambo, and the historic salt pans of Maras, still in use today by local families.
Alongside these cultural experiences, the tour includes birdwatching excursions in well-known areas around Cusco. At Lake Huacarpay, we may spot Bearded Mountaineer, Andean Gull, Giant Hummingbird, and Rusty-fronted Canastero. The forests around Sacsayhuamán offer opportunities to see Creamy-crested Spinetail and other Andean species. We also visit the cloud forests near Machu Picchu, where the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock can be seen displaying, and explore the scenic road to Abra Málaga, home to specialties like the White-tufted Sunbeam.
Throughout the week, we expect to see around 200 species of birds, including several Andean endemics and colorful hummingbirds—many of them in or near archaeological settings that create spectacular backdrops for both photography and learning.
This tour is ideal for travelers seeking an immersive but relaxed experience, with a balance of natural beauty and cultural depth. Accommodations are comfortable, transportation is private, and all excursions are guided by professionals with experience in both birding and archaeology.
