ENDEMIC BIRDS OF CAJAMARCA AND THE MARAÑON VALLEY

Endemic birds of Cajamarca and the Marañon valley

A rewarding birding journey through the heart of northern Peru

This 10-day tour focuses on the endemic and range-restricted birds of northern Peru, particularly those found in and around the Marañón Valley, one of the most biologically unique regions in South America. With over 30 target species, many found nowhere else on Earth, this trip is ideal for birders looking to expand their life list while enjoying a scenic and culturally rich part of the country.

Our journey begins in the highland city of Cajamarca, where we explore dry inter-Andean valleys and montane scrub in search of Grey-bellied Comet, Great Spinetail, and the charming Rufous-backed Inca-Finch. The high-altitude landscapes provide both impressive vistas and excellent opportunities to spot rare and localized species.

We then descend into the Marañón Valley, a semi-arid corridor that harbors one of the highest concentrations of endemism in Peru. Here, we target key species such as Marañón Thrush, Marañón Gnatcatcher, Grey-winged and Buff-bridled Inca-Finches, Chestnut-backed Thornbird, Peruvian Pigeon, and the splendid Yellow-faced Parrotlet.

As the tour continues, we gradually enter the humid eastern slope of the Andes, where the influence of the dry valley remains, yet cloud forest habitats begin to dominate. In this transition zone, we search for birds like Atuen Antpitta, Russet-mantled Softtail, Yellow-scarfed Tanager, and Crimson-mantled Woodpecker. With luck, we may also witness Andean Condors soaring over the dramatic cliffs near Leymebamba.

The next stage takes us to the famous Huembo Reserve, where feeders regularly attract the exquisite Marvelous Spatuletail, one of the world’s most iconic hummingbirds. We also hike to San Lorenzo, a rewarding destination for those hoping to see the elusive Pale-billed Antpitta. Along the way, we look for other specialties such as Speckled-faced Parrot, Rufous-capped Antshrike, Lacrimose Mountain-Tanager, Pale-eyed Thrush, and Black-and-white Becard.

Our final birding sites include the area around Jaén, located in the northern tip of the Marañón Valley. Here we target species like the Little Inca-Finch, Marañón Spinetail, Chinchipe Spinetail, and more dry forest specialists.

To conclude the journey, we travel to the coastal city of Chiclayo, where we explore the Tumbesian region—a dry forest biome that is home to distinct endemics like the Peruvian Plantcutter, Rufous Flycatcher, and Scarlet-backed Woodpecker.

This tour is ideal for experienced birders who seek a focused and fulfilling birding experience in an area rich with endemics, cultural history, and dramatic scenery. With moderate hiking, comfortable local lodges, and expert guiding, the itinerary is designed to maximize sightings while maintaining an enjoyable and unhurried pace.
