BIRDING AND AMAZONIAN WILDLIFE

Birding and Amazonian wildlife

An intense 15-day journey through the heart of the Amazon rainforest

Join us on an unforgettable 15-day journey through the heart of the Amazon rainforest in southern Peru—home to some of the world’s most spectacular bird diversity. This immersive birding expedition takes you deep into two of the most celebrated wilderness areas in South America: the Los Amigos Conservation Concession and the Tambopata National Reserve.
These lush lowland forests, nourished by the Los Amigos and Tambopata river systems, are a paradise for birders. Throughout the trip, you can expect to see over 400 bird species, including many Amazonian specialties and range-restricted highlights.
We begin at the Los Amigos Biological Station, known for its remarkable mosaic of habitats: floodplain forest, palm swamps, bamboo thickets, and terra firme. Some of the target species here include the striking Black-faced Cotinga, White-throated Antbird, Brown-rumped Foliage-gleaner, Dusky-tailed Flatbill, and Goeldi’s Antbird, along with seasonal chances for Zigzag Heron and Crested Eagle. The station’s extensive trail network allows for slow, focused birding—ideal for observing secretive understory birds and canopy species alike.
We then travel to the Tambopata National Reserve, where we stay at three exceptional lodges operated by Rainforest Expeditions: Refugio Amazonas, Tambopata Research Center, and Posada Amazonas. Here, we explore habitats from bamboo stands to riverine forests and clay licks alive with macaws.
At Tambopata Research Center, you’ll have the rare chance to observe the critically localized Peruvian Recurvebill, Purus Jacamar, and Rufous-breasted Piculet, as well as the Blue-headed Macaw and Red-and-green Macaw. The famous clay lick nearby offers a stunning spectacle of parrot activity each morning. Refugio Amazonas provides access to canopy towers and oxbow lakes, where Horned Screamers, Agami Herons, and Sungrebes can be seen. In the surrounding forests, you might encounter White-cheeked Tody-Tyrant, Rufous Motmot, or even Manakins performing their dances.
This expedition is crafted for people who love birds, wild nature, and immersive experiences—without compromising on comfort. With private boat transfers, expert bilingual birding guides, and stays in well-appointed eco-lodges, you’ll explore the Amazon at a gentle pace, with time to enjoy the sights, sounds, and stillness of the rainforest.
