ANDEAN ENDEMICS TOUR, THE PERU ENDEMIC BIRDS

Andean endemics tour

A journey through Peru’s spectacular highlands in search of unique birds and unforgettable landscapes

This 20-day Andean Endemics Tour takes you through the heart of central and northern Peru, exploring dramatic Andean landscapes and a wide variety of ecosystems in search of the country’s most remarkable endemic bird species.

We begin the adventure around Lima, where we’ll explore the coastal lomas (fog-fed hills), beaches, and marshlands. These rare ecosystems are home to fascinating birds such as the Surf Cinclodes, Coastal Miner, and Peruvian Thick-knee. Then we ascend into the central Andes, visiting the Santa Eulalia Valley, where we look for high-altitude treasures like the Rufous-breasted Warbling-finch, White-bellied Cinclodes, and the majestic Andean Condor.

Next, we fly to Cajamarca, in Peru’s northern highlands. Here, we begin our search for the endemics of the Marañón Valley, one of the country’s most biodiverse and isolated regions. Among the highlights are the Cajamarca Antpitta, the rare and beautiful Grey-bellied Comet, and the Great Spinetail.

As we descend into the dry Marañón Valley, we focus on species found nowhere else on Earth, such as the Grey-winged Inca-finch, Chestnut-backed Thornbird, and Yellow-faced Parrotlet. These arid forested canyons are not only rich in birdlife but also offer striking scenery and peaceful moments in nature.

The tour then transitions to the eastern slopes of the Andes, where the lush Abra Patricia cloud forests and the lower Mayo and Huallaga valleys await. Here, we may encounter up to 56 Peruvian endemics, along with dozens of other range-restricted species. Star birds of this region include the dazzling Marvelous Spatuletail, elusive Long-whiskered Owlet, tiny Johnson’s Tody-Flycatcher, Koepcke’s Hermit, and colorful Black-bellied Tanager.

Throughout the journey, we travel through a wide array of habitats—from coastal deserts and high-altitude grasslands, to humid montane cloud forests and dry inter-Andean valleys. This variation offers not only exceptional birding, but also ever-changing landscapes and ecosystems.

This tour is ideal for seasoned birders who enjoy a comprehensive and rewarding nature experience, with the support of expert guides, carefully selected accommodations, and thoughtfully planned logistics to ensure a smooth and enjoyable pace.
