I’ve been travelling the Andes for more than 20 years now, and during this time I’ve found many amazing birds. In this post I would like to share seven of the many common but beautiful birds I’ve ever seen birding in Peru.
Why common birds? just because they are easy to find in the birding or bird photo tours we offer and, furthermore, they are extremely beautiful !!!!!
Why only seven? well, there are certainly much more common and beautiful species out there in the eastern Andes of Peru, but I wanted to choose the ones I like the most. So, let’s enjoy it…
This is probably the most wanted bird in our trips to the eastern Peruvian Andes. Fortunately, in Cuzco there is a fantastic and accesible lek of this species, very active in the first hours of the morning. There is a hide in front of the lek, allowing people to have great views and photographs of the birds.
If you want to see this amazing bird just book on our 2021 “Birding Peru and Machu Picchu” tour.
Small, even for a hummingbird, but really beautiful. Common along the montane humid forest of the Andes. Those rusty colored puffs and the long tail feathers of the adult males make the species unmistakeable.
This species is easy to see and photograph in north Peru at the hummingbird feeders of Fundo Alto Nieva.
One of my favorite tanagers. This colorful species lives at high elevation in the eastern slope of the Andes, between an elevation of 2900 and 3700 meters. It’s easy to see moving within the treeline forest around Wayqecha Lodge, in Cuzco.
Come birding with us to Cuzco and the Manu lowlands to see this bird.
It’s a common bird in Amazonia, but also can be found in the mountains up to an elevation of 1600 meters. Usually found with other species in large mixed species flocks. Easy to find in our Cuzco and the Manu lowlands birding tour.
One of the most beautiful hummingbirds I’ve ever seen. Birding in Peru is fantastic for hummingbirds, and this one is quite easy to see in the mountains of north Peru. Probably, one of the best places to see this hummer in Peru is at the Waqanki Reserve hummingbird feeders, which we visit in our “Northern Peru Birding Tour: Mayo and Huallaga Valleys” tour.
One of the most beautiful tanagers of the high elevation mountains of the Andes. Inhabits the humid mountain forests near the treeline, and usually moves with mixed species flocks. This species can be seen in our “Central and north-eastern Andes” tour.
And finally, number 7 of the list, but by far the most beautiful hummingbird of the world: the Marvelous Spatuletail. No wonder everybody wants to see and photograph it: bright colors, gracile mouvements, and an incredibly beautiful tail. If you come to Peru you can’t miss this bird at the Huembo hummingbird feeders, visited in our “Northern Peru Birding Tour: Mayo and Huallaga Valleys” tour.
I hope you enjoyed this selection of 7 common but amazing birds of the eastern Peruvian Andes. For more information about our 2021 birding tours to Peru please visit www.greentours.com.pe
