15-day tour

Intense 15-day Birding and Amazonian Wildlife tour in southern Peruvian Amazonia. Since we will be birding in the Amazonian lowlands, you will have the opportunity to see more than 400 bird species and a lot of other wildlife between the Los Amigos and the Tambopata rivers.

First, we take a flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado, the biggest city in southern Peruvian Amazonia. After that, we take a boat up the Río Madre de Dios to Los Amigos Biological Station, in the province of Manu. Los Amigos reserve has an impressive trail system that goes through different habitats. Therefore, we could find a great diversity of birds. For example, Black-faced Cotinga, White-throated Antbird, Zone-tailed Hawk, just to mention a few. Additionally, In these pristine forests it is not rare to find high diversity of monkeys, amphibians and reptiles.

After those fantastic days in Manu, the Birding and Amazonian Wildlife tour goes to the Tambopata National Reserve. Once in the reserve, we stay at three different lodges: Posada Amazonas, Tambopata Research Center, and Refugio Amazonas. During our stay at the Tambopata Research Center, we’ll have chances for an interesting listi of birds. For instance, Purus Jacamar, Peruvian Recurvebill, Rufous-breasted Piculet, White-cheeked Tody-tyrant, and several species of macaws and parrots. Besides, we will visit oxbow lakes with Giant River Otters, different species of Caimans, and probably Green Anacondas. Moreover, we could spot jaguars and tapirs along the river margins.

The Birding and Amazonian Wildlife tour finishes in the city of Puerto Maldonado, where we will take a flight back to Lima. Finally, visiting the Manu and Tambopata areas can be the birding and wildlife experience of a lifetime.

Arrival in Lima and transfer to the hotel.

Firs, we will visit the Pucusana fishing port, where we will take a boat to search for Humboldt Penguin, Red-legged Cormorant, and Inca Tern. Then, in the afternoon we drive back to Lima, stopping on the way at the Villa Marshes reserve. Here, we will search for Many-colored Rush-Tyrant, Wren-like Rushbird, Peruvian Thick-knee, and lots of shorebirds.

Birding and Amazonian wildlife - Humboldt's Penguin

Lima – Puerto Maldonado

Now, we take a flight to Puerto Maldonado. Thereon, we will be transferred to the hotel for lunch.

We will spend the afternoon birding just outside the city.

Puerto Maldonado – Los Amigos lodge

This time, we’ll take a public boat (with individual seats and a roof) to Los Amigos lodge. While on the boat we could have some birding , with Great Black Hawk, Black Skimmer, and several species of macaws or raptors flying above the river.

Once at Los Amigos, we will begin to explore the pristine forests around the lodge. First, we will be birding the floodplain forest, looking for special birds like White-eyed Antwren, Chestnut-winged Hookbill, White-throated Antbird. Also, there is a the trail that leads to a small lake. Here, it is possible to find Amazonian-Streaked Antwren, Green-and-Rufous Kingfisher, Hoatzin, and more.

In the same way that the previous day, we will explore terra firme and floodplain forests. Today, we might find mixed species flocks with Opal-rumped Tanager, Pink-throated Becard, White-winged Shrike-Tanager, and more.

Los Amigos lodge

Immediately after an early breakfast, we will be looking for bamboo specialists. That is, birds like Long-crested Pygmy-tyrant, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Bamboo Antshrike, White-lined Antbird, and more.

Later, we will make a walk on terra firme forest. The trails around the lodge go into pristine forest, consequently, we have good chances for raptors like Zone-tailed Hawk or Black-and-White Hawk-eagle, at close range.

Since the area is highly diverse, it is worth to have an extra full day to explore the different trails around the lodge.

Los Amigos – Posada Amazonas lodge

Today we go back to Puerto Maldonado to take a car to the Tambopata River port. However, during the drive we can make a few stops along the road to look for Scaled Pigeon, Purus Jacamar, or Common Potoo.

After that, a private boat will take us upstream to Posada Amazonas lodge. Once on the river, we could have good views of King Vulture, Pied Lapwing, Bat Falcon, Olive Oropendola, and other species.

Birding and Amazonian wildlife - Common Potoo

Posada Amazonas Lodge

First, just before breakfast, we will visit the canopy tower to enjoy colourful parrots, macaws, toucans, tanagers, woodpeckers, and other Amazonian wildlife.

After a good breakfast, we will go to the Tres Chimbadas lake. Once there, we will explore the lake on a catamaran, looking for Giant River Otters, Hoatzin, Caimans, Horned Screamer, and Macaws.

After that, we explore the bamboo patches near the lake. The goal is to look for bamboo specialists like Peruvian Recurvebill, Rufous-breasted Piculet, White-cheeked Tody-tyrant, and others.

Posada Amazonas Lodge – Tambopata Research Center (TRC)

Today we go deeper in the pristine jungle, to the Tambopata Research Center. During the boat trip, we have chances to see Razor-billed Curassow, Capped Heron, Large-billed Tern, and other species. Occasionally, toucans, macaws, and raptors can be seen flying above the boat. Also, if we get lucky, we might see Tapirs and Jaguars on the river banks.

Finally, we’ll be arriving to the lodge in the late afternoon.

Tambopata Research Center

Before breakfast, we will traverse the river to enjoy hundreds of parrots and macaws that congregate at he clay lick every day. Here, we expect to see more than 10 species of these beautiful birds.

After breakfast we will explore the Ocelot Trail, looking for Sunbittern and Agami Heron. After a while, we will explore the Toucan Trail. Here, we will be on Terra Firme forest, as a result, we expect several species of Manakins, Trogons, Antbirds, Woodcreepers, Tanagers, and much more.

We plan to spend the afternoon enjoying the lodge’s gardens.

Birding and Amazonian wildlife - Red-and-green Macaw

Tambopata Research Center

We will explore different kind of habitats during these two days.

First, we sear the riparian habitat, located near the river’s shores. This is the habitat of the Rufous-fronted Anthrush, also, we could see Cabanis’s Spinetail, Lemon-throated Barbet, and Amazonian Antpitta. Then, on the grassy areas, we could find Dark-breasted Spinetail, Spotted Tody-flycatcher, Orange-headed Tanager, and others.

Secondly, we visit the transitional forest. Here, we will try to spot White-throated Jacamar, Scarlet-hooded Barbet, Yellow-billed Nunbird and others.

Additionally, we can do some night birding. In these forests we will have great chances to see Great Potoo, Tawny-bellied Screech-owl, Long-tailed Potoo, and, if we are lucky, a Crested Owl.

Tambopata Research Center – Refugio Amazonas

In the early morning we will be transferred to Refugio Amazonas lodge.  Hence, we should be arriving to the lodge at around noon.

Since the plan is to spend the afternoon birding around the lodge, we expect to have birds like Solitary Cacique, Barred Antshrike, and others.

Refugio Amazonas – Puerto Maldonado – Lima

In the morning we take a boat back to Puerto Maldonado. Then, we will have a traditional farewell lunch with the native community of Infierno.

Later, you will be taken to the airport for your flight back to Lima.

Since we will be in Amazonia, most days will be warm and humid, with a mixture of sunshine and overcast conditions. Ocassionally, Some rain should be expected, from brief showers to sometimes extended periods of heavy rain.

Time Zone

Peru is 5 hours behind GMT. Also, it is in the same time zone as US Eastern Standard Time Zone. Also, it does not observe daylight-savings time.


You need to have a Covid-19 vaccine. Additionally, having a Yellow Fever vaccine at least 10 days before your trip is recommended, but not mandatory.


220 volts in Lima. The lodges lack electricity, but a generator is turned on once a day to recharge batteries for guests or lodge facilities. At night it is very dark, so we recommend good flashlights. Also, light is provided by numerous kerosene lamps and candles.

Physical effort

People should be in good physical condition in order to do hikes in the humid Amazonian forest. This is because some hikes can take up to 4 hours. Also, people should be able to step in and out of boats and canoes with any problem.
